At the conclusion of this unit a student shall be able to:

• Explain the difference between the skin of the scalp and other body skin
• Understand the importance of the consultation
• Describe the structure, layers, and mechanisms of the scalp
• List the purpose and function of the scalp skin
• List and describe the three layers of the hair shaft
• Describe the process for each of the 3 stages of hair growth
• Discuss types of hair loss as they relate to hair services
• Recognize hair and scalp disorders commonly seen in the salon
• Identify common disorders and diseases of the scalp, skin, and hair
• Understand when Hair Braiding services can be performed on a client with a disorder or disease of the scalp and when should the client with a disease or disorder be referred to physician and when services are prohibited.
• Describe treatments used for these disorders and when to refer a client to a physician

After this unit a student shall be able to:

• To define the limitations of the authority of the Board of Cosmetology;
• To define the rulemaking authority of the Board of Cosmetology;
• To understand the qualifications for licensure;
• To understand the procedures and context of examinations;
• To comprehend the requirements for cosmetology salons and inspections;
• To be aware of the disciplinary proceedings and penalties for violations of Chapter 477, F.S.;
• To understand the complaint procedures for violations of Chapter 477, F.S., or the rules promulgated pursuant thereto;
• To understand the requirements through rules and regulations for license renewal; and
• To know the fees and their disposition.
