He is a past president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA) and the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association; a fellow and director of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers; a diplomate of both the National College of Advocacy and the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys; and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).

Herman was a lead negotiator for plaintiffs in the $368 billion proposed settlement with the tobacco industry and was on the private counsel team that recovered $4.6 billion for Louisiana through its attorney general. In addition to his impressive track record for plaintiffs, Herman's body of work includes product liability, environmental, anti trust and Civil RICO defense work.

His book, Courtroom Persuasion: Art, Drama & Science, was published by West Group, Clark Boardman & Callaghan and the ATLA Press in 1997. He is also the creator and performer of ATLA's best-selling, six-volume Video Trial Practice Series, Courtroom Persuasion: Art, Drama & Science.
